From the recording There is a Balm Gilead

There is a Balm in Gilead starts rather dreamily, in an impressionistic style, before settling in on a G major tonal center. The arrangement is sprinkled with colorful chords and modulation throughout, setting a mood of calm and serenity. In the middle section, the piece moves to the key of E-flat, and the chordal refrain is accompanied by a drone bass pedal point amid a sea of undulating fourths in the left hand. The piece gradually finds it's way back to the home key, before fading away into the distance just as eerily as it began.
